Q: What is the difference between biodegradable and compostable?
A: There is no industry standard definition for biodegradable. The issue is there are so many environments that biodegradable products can end up in (ex. landfill, incinerator, litter, etc.), it is difficult to determine a standard length of time for biodegradation. Environmental factors that affect biodegradation are the amount of heat, light, oxygen, and organisms in the soil.
Compostable items on the other hand are usually meant to end up in industrial composting facilities. That means standards can be created to make reasonably sure the compostable items break down in a certain period of time. ASTM D6400 is usually the standard used to determine if something is compostable in the United States. The PLA resin used to manufacture Ohanaware cutlery has been BPI certified (ASTM D6400 Compliant). Click Here to view the resin’s BPI certification.
Q: Why can’t I find plastic cutlery in stores anymore?
A: Bill 40 (Ordinance 19-30) on Oahu and Bill 52 (Ordinance 5084) on Maui banned the sale of disposable plastic service ware. The bans go into effect 9/5/22 and 3/1/22, respectively. For more information about plastic bans in each of the four counties of Hawaii, Click Here.
Q: Does Ohanaware have eco-friendly items other than compostable cutlery?
A: Not at this time. We are working on expanding the line to include other tableware. If you have suggestions for additional green products, please Contact Us.
